Removal methods

How a specialist clears ear wax

a room with a desk, phone, and other items on the wall
Microsuction
A small vacuum draws the wax out under direct vision. The audiologist watches through a microscope or loupes while keeping the suction tip away from the eardrum.
Irrigation
A controlled stream of warm water flushes the wax out. The audiologist adjusts the pressure so it stays gentle against the ear canal walls.
When the ear is left alone
If the audiologist sees a perforation, infection or recent surgery, they will not attempt removal. They will explain why and suggest what to do instead.

Before the appointment

What the audiologist checks first

The shape and condition of the ear canal determine which method is safe. These factors guide that decision.

  • Canal width Narrow ear canals limit the space available for instruments or water flow.
  • Eardrum condition A perforated eardrum rules out irrigation entirely, leaving microsuction as the only option.
  • Wax depth Deep wax impaction near the eardrum requires steady, careful microsuction to remove safely.
  • Infection signs Swelling or discharge means wax removal must wait until the ear heals.

What happens after you enquire

You write down what you have noticed in your ear. That is all you need to do. The rest follows from there without any obligation on your part.

  1. As soon as you send it

    Submit the form

Describe the blockage, muffled hearing or discomfort you have noticed. Include anything relevant, such as previous ear problems or surgery. No medical records are needed at this stage.

  2. Usually within a day

    Receive a response

A specialist firm reads your description. They will contact you to ask any remaining questions and explain whether their clinic can handle your specific situation safely.

  3. At a time you agree

    Attend the appointment

The audiologist examines your ear canal on arrival. They decide then whether to proceed with microsuction, irrigation, or to leave the ear alone and advise you further.

How this site works

  • Each firm decides its own availability and pricing
  • Sending an enquiry does not book an appointment

Questions about ear wax removal

Does microsuction hurt?

Most people feel a pulling sensation and hear noise from the suction. It should not be painful. If it becomes uncomfortable, the audiologist stops immediately. Tell them straight away rather than trying to tolerate it.

Should I use olive oil drops beforehand?

Many audiologists recommend softening the wax with olive oil drops for three to five days before the appointment. Softened wax comes out faster and more comfortably. Ask the specialist firm what they prefer when they contact you.

Why might the audiologist refuse to remove my wax?

Active infections, perforated eardrums, recent ear surgery or certain skin conditions make removal unsafe. The audiologist will examine the ear first and explain clearly why they cannot proceed if any of these apply.

How long does the appointment take?

The examination and removal usually take between fifteen and thirty minutes. Complex cases where the wax is very hard or deep may take longer. The audiologist will not rush the procedure.

Will my hearing return to normal straight away?

If wax was the only cause of the muffled hearing, most people notice a difference immediately after the procedure. If hearing remains poor, the audiologist may recommend a full hearing test to look for other causes.
